The engine models numbers, which are essential for identifying and servicing the engine, are either stamped directly onto the engine, on the valve cover, or printed on a label affixed to the engine.

BRIGGS & STRATTON

To locate the identification numbers (MODEL NUMBER, TYPE NUMBER, and CODE NUMBER) on a Briggs & Stratton engine, you can typically find them in several places. These numbers, which are essential for identifying and servicing the engine, are either stamped directly onto the engine, on the valve cover, or printed on a label affixed to the engine. The model number is usually 11-12 characters long and can be found in various locations, such as near the starter, on the cylinder shield, the metal shield, valve cover, above the spark plug, in front of the engine, above the muffler, or on the fuel tank.

Please Note: If the model & type numbers on your Briggs & Stratton engine are only 9 characters, please enter a 0 (zero) at the beginning of the model number.

HONDA

For Honda engines, you'll find the MODEL NUMBER on an engine label, and it always starts with the letter "G," denoting the engine series. If it's a vertical engine, there will be a "V" in the model number. The engine TYPE CODE is stamped into the engine's side, typically close to the SERIAL NUMBER. The type code can be up to 4 characters long, and if it's less than 4 characters, you might see asterisks as placeholders (e.g., QX** represents a QX type engine).

KAWASAKI

Kawasaki engine identification involves the model CODE NUMBER, usually comprising the first 6 characters (e.g., FR651V). You'll typically find this code on the engine block or fan shroud. The initial two letters, like "FR," signify the engine series or family. The first character indicates whether it's a 2-stroke (T) or a 4-stroke (F) engine in the series. The numeric portion (e.g., 651) represents the engine's displacement, and the sixth character (V or D) indicates the crankshaft orientation, with "V" for vertical and "D" for direct/horizontal engines. The SPECIFICATION CODE (e.g., AS38) reveals the precise set of parts needed for a specific engine and identifies it to Kawasaki. Understanding the spec code is crucial for efficient parts lookup. The first digit in the spec code (e.g., A) is the revision code, which progresses alphabetically as parts change. The second, third, and fourth characters (e.g., S38) specify how an OEM ordered the engine. The E/NO number under the barcode serves as the SERIAL NUMBER.

KOHLER

KOHLER engine identification numbers (model, specification and serial) hold the keys to efficient repair, ordering the correct parts and engine replacement. These are printed on a silver decal, which is normally affixed to the blower housing of the engine. Make a note of your engine identification numbers in your owner's manual for handy reference.

All KOHLER engines will have the decal shown below except for the XT Series, shown at the bottom of the page.

Within each series of KOHLER engines are various models.  Use model number to locate manuals for your engine.
